Islamic Battalions, Stocked With Chechens, Aid Ukraine in War With Rebels – The New York Times

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, unless they are my enemy. Then there are complicated Venn Diagrams and a lot of lists to decide who is what.

I am sure the Ukraine welcomes the help, they are fighting a proxy war with a G8 country after all. They are also getting very little direct help from the west. They aren’t a NATO country, so we have no treaty obliging us to help them defend themselves. We are still providing what aid we can while trying to avoid being in direct conflict with Russia. This could be the first US proxy vs. Russia proxy war.

However it turns out, it looks like the Ukraine is going to be bogged down in conflict for a while.

Acknowledging Moscow as an enemy shared with Kiev, one leader from Chechnya said, “We never ran from our war with Russia, and we never will.”
